1 CONT Levi Terpenning bap. 11 July 1762 and probably is the Levi Terpenning who 
1 CONC died 26 Nov. 1835, age 72 and buried in the New Hurley Reformed Dutch 
1 CONC Church graveyard.
1 CONT  He married prior to 1784 Catherine (or as is commonly found in the 
1 CONC records Catrina) Gee, daughter of William & Martha (...) Gee. William Gee 
1 CONC Sr.'s will is dated 1 Sep. 1797 and in it he mentions "grandsons William 
1 CONC Terpenning son of Levi." He does not mention his other Terpenning 
1 CONC grandchildren and probably only William Terpenning a legacy because he 
1 CONC was his namesake. Catrina, wife of Levi, died before 1796,
1 CONT at which time Levi had married for his second wife Anna Cole or Koole. 
1 CONT She was born 26 Feb. 1768 and died 16 Dec. 1841 and is buried at New 
1 CONC Hurley also.
1 CONT  Levi Terpenning bought land in Virgil, N.Y. on 2 Nov. 1812 and is 
1 CONC mentioned as "Levi Terpenning of Shawangunk, Ulster Co., N.Y." It is 
1 CONC possible that Levi never lived in Cortland Co. but merely owned land 
1 CONC there. He does not appear in the 1830 federal census of Cortland County, 
1 CONC N.Y. which is further proof that the Levi who died in New Hurley in 1835 
1 CONC was him. His sons Henry, Mernus, and Noah Terpenning all appear in the 
1 CONC 1830 census for Cortland Co. as do several people by the name of Gee. 
1 CONC There is much research that could be done on Levi in Ulster and Cortland 
1 CONC Counties.

1 CONT         I. Levi Terpenning of the town of Shawangunk in the County of 
1 CONC Ulster State of New York do by these presents make publish and declare 
1 CONC unto my Son Marenus Terpenning and to his heirs and assigns forever, 
1 CONC forty acres of land to be set off from the westerly part of a lot of one 
1 CONC hundred acres of land purchased by me of Silas Lincoln in the Township of 
1 CONC Virgil, County of Courtland. The remainder of said lot of one hundred 
1 CONC acres in the Township of Virgil aforesaid, I give and devise unto my Son 
1 CONC Noah Terpenning and to his Heirs and assigns forever.  Item   I give and 
1 CONC devise unto my Son Noah Terpenning and to his Heirs and assigns forever, 
1 CONC A certain lot of two acres of land in the Township of Virgil aforesaid, 
1 CONC also purchased from the said Silas Lincoln

1 CONT Item    I hereby release my Son Marenus from all debt or liability on 
1 CONC account of the two following Notes, which I hold against him, one a Note 
1 CONC for fifty Dollars, dated the thirty first day of October in the year of 
1 CONC our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and fourteen, and bearing Interest 
1 CONC from the date thereof. The other a Note drawn by the said Marenus and 
1 CONC myself in favor of John W. Dickerson bearing date the thirtieth day of 
1 CONC December one thousand eight hundred and sixteen and payable the first day 
1 CONC of April next ensuing the date thereof, for fifteen Dollars, which I have 
1 CONC paid, and I direct my Executors herein after mentioned to deliver up said 
1 CONC Notes to my son Marenus.

1 CONT Item    I hereby also release my said Son Noah from all debt or liability 
1 CONC on account of a Note which I now hold drawn by him for sixty one Dollars, 
1 CONC payable one year after date, and dated the sixth day of January one

1 CONC up the said Note to my son Noah.

1 CONT Item    I give and devise unto my Son Henry Terpenning the sum of one 
1 CONC hundred Dollars to be paid to the said Henry, in the manner following, 
1 CONC sixty Dollars to be paid by my Son Noah; and forty Dollars to be paid by 
1 CONC my Son Marenus, and to secure the payment whereof, I encumber the several 
1 CONC estates both real and personal hereby given and devised to the said Noah 
1 CONC and Marenus, with the payment of their respective portion of the said sum 
1 CONC of one hundred Dollars, so as last aforesaid directed to be paid to my 
1 CONC said Son Henry.

1 CONT Item    I release and discharge my said Son Henry from all Dept or 
1 CONC Lability on account of a Note which I now hold, drawn by him for forty 
1 CONC Dollars and thirty four cents, dated the sixth day of January, one

1 CONC thereof, and I direct my Executors to deliver up the said Note to my son 
1 CONC Henry.

1 CONT Item    I give and devise to my Daughter Maria seventeen Acres of land in 
1 CONC the Town of Plattekill, conveyed to me by Elias Gerow and Elizabeth his 
1 CONC wife by Deed bearing date the third day of January one thousand eight 
1 CONC hundred and twenty seven. The said seventeen Acres to be taken out of the 
1 CONC middle of the said land so as aforesaid conveyed to me by said Gerow, to 
1 CONC have and to hold the said seventeen acres, for and during the full term 
1 CONC of her natural life, and from and after her decease, I give and devise 
1 CONC the same, to her Child or Children lawfully begotten (if any there be) 
1 CONC and their heirs and assigns forever; But in case she shall die without 
1 CONC leaving any Child or Children lawfully begotten, then I give and devise 
1 CONC the same after her decease to my Son William Terpenning, his Heirs and 
1 CONC assigns forever.

1 CONT Item    All the residue and the remainder of said land conveyed by Gerow 
1 CONC aforesaid, lying in the Town of Plattekill, I give and devise unto my 
1 CONC Sons William Terpenning, and Levi Terpenning their heirs and assigns 
1 CONC forever, to be divided equally between them share and share alike.

1 CONT Item    I give and devise unto my two Daughters, Sarah the widow of 
1 CONC Robert Doughterty, and Anna the Wife of Walter Gale, to their Heirs and 
1 CONC assigns forever equally to be divided between them, twenty four Acres of 
1 CONC land, part of my farm or lot, know as lot number two in the Town of 
1 CONC Plattekill aforesaid to be set off and contains as follows, beginning at 
1 CONC the line of Ebenzer Cooley's land on the boundary line between the land I 
1 CONC purchased from the said Gerow and my said lot number two aforesaid, 
1 CONC running thence along the said last mentioned boundary line, twelve 
1 CONC chains, thence running unto the said lot, on a course with Cooley's line 
1 CONC to such a point, that by running a line from the said point parallel with 
1 CONC the first course until it meets with Cooley's line to the place of 
1 CONC beginning, a lot or parcel of land which shall enclosed containing twenty 
1 CONC four Acres.

1 CONT Item    All the residue and remainder of my said lot of land number two 
1 CONC in Plattekill aforesaid, and all my land and real estate of whatever 
1 CONC nature or kind situate in the last mentioned Town, not herein given or 
1 CONC devised, I give and devise to my said Son Levi his Heirs and assigns

1 CONT Item    I give and devise unto my Daughter Catharine widow of Joseph B. 
1 CONC Ranson a certain lot of land, lying in the Town of Shawangunk, which I 
1 CONC purchased from William A. Welles; to have and to hold the same for and 
1 CONC during her, natural life, upon the special trust and confidence, and with 
1 CONC full power and authority to cause or procure the said farm to be 
1 CONC cultivated, or if she shall deem it advisable to let or lease the same 
1 CONC for a term not exceeding three years, and upon further trust to receive 
1 CONC the rents and profits thereof, and to apply the same for her own 
1 CONC maintenance and support and for the nurture and education of her children 
1 CONC in such manner and proportion as she may deem proper, and from and after 
1 CONC her death I give and devise the said farm so as aforesaid given to her 
1 CONC for life to her child or children lawfully begotten and his or her Heirs 
1 CONC and assigns forever.

1 CONC use of all the personal property which I have lent her, and which is in

1 CONC to have and to hold the same for and during the full term of her natural 
1 CONC life, and after her decease, I give and devise the same to her lawful 
1 CONC child or children or their Heirs or assigns forever; But in case my said 
1 CONC Daughter Maria should die without leaving lawful issue; in such case I 
1 CONC give and devise the said lot to my said son William his Heirs and assigns

1 CONT Item    I give and devise unto my said Daughter Maria a Beaureau, two 
1 CONC feather Beds and necessary bedding thereto absolutely; I also give unto 
1 CONC my said Daughter Maria, the use and enjoyment of the east room in the 
1 CONC house wherein I now reside with the necessary privilege in the garden, 
1 CONC and cellar room in the cellar under said house and the privilege of 
1 CONC getting water from the well and spring, to have and to hold the same 
1 CONC rooms, cellar room and privilege as long as she my said Daughter Maria 
1 CONC shall remain unmarried. I also give to my said Daughter Maria so long as 
1 CONC she shall remain unmarried the exclusive use of one table, six chairs, 
1 CONC and necessary cooking utensils and table furniture suitable to her 
1 CONC situation and degree in life also the exclusive use and benefit during 
1 CONC the same time of two milk Cows, six Sheep and the brown Mare, to be kept, 
1 CONC both winter and summer at the expense of and by my said son William.

1 CONT Item    I order my said son William at his own proper cost and expense to 
1 CONC furnish and provide my said Daughter Maria during the time she shall 
1 CONC remain unmarried all necessary firewood cut and split up at the house 
1 CONC wherein I now reside and ready to be put upon the fire, and further that 
1 CONC my said son William shall in like manner and for the like term of time as 
1 CONC last aforesaid furnish and provide for my said daughter Maria with all 
1 CONC necessary and suitable food and clothing, and medical aid and other 
1 CONC necessaries of whatever kind she may require or may be proper for her 
1 CONC support and comfort, and I do hereby select and appoint my said son Levi 
1 CONC and my friend David McWherry or the survivor of them sole discretion to 
1 CONC determine and devise what shall be necessary and proper for my said 
1 CONC daughter Maria, within the meaning and intention of the last aforesaid 
1 CONC division and it is my will and I do so ordain that the determination and 
1 CONC decision of the said Levi and David be final and conclusive.

1 CONT Item    I give and devise unto my said son William, all the land lying in 
1 CONC the Town of Shawangunk aforesaid which fell to my share in the partition 
1 CONC and division of my Fathers real estate to have and to hold the same to 
1 CONC him his Heirs and assigns forever. It is my will and meaning that my said 
1 CONC son William his Heirs and assigns forever shall have all my land lying 
1 CONC and being in the Town of Shawangunk aforesaid except such part thereof as 
1 CONC herein otherwise devised.

1 CONT Item    It is my will and I do so direct that my wife shall have the 
1 CONC privilege of residing in the house wherein I now reside during her 
1 CONC natural life, and further I do give and devise unto her all my personal 
1 CONC property not otherwise devised absolutely.

1 CONC proper cost and charges at all times to furnish my wife during her 
1 CONC lifetime with board and washing lodging and clothing and all necessary 
1 CONC apparel suitable to her rank and station in life together with medical 
1 CONC aid and attendance which she may from time to time require and in case it 
1 CONC should so happen my wife should think proper not to reside in the house 
1 CONC where I now reside in such case she may and can hire and take board in 
1 CONC such place as she may think proper and my sons William and Levi shall pay 
1 CONC for the same, and I do hereby declare that the said devise, provisions 
1 CONC and directions to and concerning my wife are meant and intended to be in 
1 CONC full lieu and bar of all right and claim of power of in or to my estate 
1 CONC or any part thereof, and in order to secure the performance of act and 
1 CONC charges and things which I have by this my last Will and Testament 
1 CONC ordered to be done and attended by my sons William and Levi, I make the 
1 CONC real estate which I have by this my last Will and Testament devised to 
1 CONC them chargeable and liable for the performance thereof, Also that my said 
1 CONC sons William and Levi are hereby directed and ordered to pay all lawful

1 CONT  He is probably the Henricus Terpenning who married at Kingston, 21 Oct. 
1 CONC 1758, Anneke van Aaken, The Anneke being written by mistake by the Donini 
1 CONC of the church. The reason for this conclusion is that after studying the 
1 CONC Terpenning & Van Aaken families there appear to be no two people who fit 
1 CONC the picture of this marrage and since Hendrikus marriage is not recorded 
1 CONC it seems quite likely that there was a mistake in recording his marriage, 
1 CONC to Maria Van Aaken.

1 CONT Forward The following is a brief outline of one branch of the Terpenning 
1 CONC family from the earliest know ancestor in this country down to 1957 
1 CONC compiled from what data I had on hand. It is not to be regarded as 
1 CONC infinite by any means or entirely free from errors caused by insufficient 
1 CONC research or typing. Much of the record within has been gotten from 
1 CONC earliest church records kept by the Dutch in early New York State. This 
1 CONC explains the variation in spelling the different names. There is hardly a 
1 CONC time when you find a name spelled exactly the the same twice and when you 
1 CONC find a name spelled exactly the same when translated into English they 
1 CONC are entirely different, i.e. Trinche in Dutch is Catherine in English, 
1 CONC Jacobus in Dutch is James and not Jacob as it is commonly mistaken for, 
1 CONC by people doing genealogical research. As I have suggested through-out 
1 CONC the following record further research. On all of these lines and their 
1 CONC are many sources that have not been checked at all, i.e. land records in 
1 CONC all cases and probate records in most. These are the two big things in 
1 CONC Genealogical research.

1 CONT Teunis Terpenning, born about 1695, died by 17 Nov. 1748.
1 CONT  His parentage is unknow at present but with more exhaustive research it 
1 CONC is possible that this information may be found.
1 CONT  It is quite certain that he was the brother of Dirk, Jan, Brechje, and 
1 CONC Clarke Terpenning who all married in Kingston, N.Y. as did Teunis and all 
1 CONC within a period of about ten years 1715-1724.
1 CONT Teunis married 30 Aug. 1718, Kingston, N.Y. at the Reformed Dutch Church 
1 CONC there, Margrieta de Greaf, bap. 3 Oct. 1697. Kingston, daughter of Moses 
1 CONC & Hester [le Maistre] de Greaf. She was alive when Teunis made his will 
1 CONC in 1746 and probably survived him.
1 CONT  His will is dated 6th of May 1746 and was proved 17 Nov. 1748. The 
1 CONC following abstract of the original which is on file at the N.Y. Court of 
1 CONC Appeals, Albany, N.Y.:
1 CONT  ".... sixth Day of May in the nineteenth year of his Majesties Reigne 
1 CONC and in the year of....One Thousand Seven hundred and forty six, I Teunis 
1 CONC Terpenning of the Corporation of Kingston in the County of Ulster and 
1 CONC Province of New York, being weak in body but of a sound and perfect 
1 CONC memory and understanding.... Do make this last will and testament in 
1 CONC manner and form following
1 CONT .... Imprimis it is my will and testament and order that my well beloved 
1 CONC Wife Gritje shall be and remain in full and ample possession of all my 
1 CONC Just Debts and funeral charges be paid....
1 CONT  I give devise and it is my will and order that my well beloved wife 
1 CONC Gritje shall be and remain in full and ample possession of all my whole 
1 CONC estate that I now possess and enjoy both real and personal and have the 
1 CONC issues and profits therof so long as my youngest child be of age (Twenty 
1 CONC one years). Then he makes provisions for the estate to be divided up

1 CONT  From the fact that Gerret Lambertzen(sen) does not act as sponsor for 
1 CONC his grandchildren, bears out the theory that his death occurred within a 
1 CONC few years after the birth of his youngest child circa 1691. He is last 
1 CONC mentioned in 1712 with JAN Terpening when each paid 5 lbs. Taxes.(History 
1 CONC of New Paltz). In the church and other records he is mentioned as Gerret 
1 CONC Lambertzen,meaning son of Lambert.
1 CONT   From the Dutch patronyarc it is certain that his fathers given NAME was 
1 CONC Lambert.
1 CONT      (My research shows his fathers surNAME was HUYBERTSEN)
1 CONT  The NAME Terpenning was first mentioned in Ulster County, NY in 1715, at 
1 CONC which time Gerret Lambertzen's oldest daughter was called Brejen 
1 CONC Teerpenning.
1 CONT   Shortly after Gerret arrived at Kingston, Ulster Co,NY we find he 
1 CONC resided at Marbletown, then a village near Kingston, where all his 
1 CONC children were born. In later years he must have resided in New Paltz, a 
1 CONC Huguenot settlement, near Kingston, New York.
1 CONT  There is still some confusion between this Gerret Terpening Lambertzen 
1 CONC born 1662/1663 and another Gerret Lambertsezen b. 1645, Gerret 
1 CONC Lambertse(zen) b. 1645 at Bunscoten, Netherlands, arrived in the New 
1 CONC World in the summer of 1663 on the ship De Bonte Koe The Spotted Cow. 
1 CONC Logic and the dates of birth would be more in line with the traditional 
1 CONC Dutch marriages where husband and wife ages were relatively close.

1 CONC Genealogy wonders what the full story must be about Lambert's son, 
1 CONC Gerrit, who is not included in Lambert's will. Many researchers even 
1 CONC question whether he  was a son of Lambert. Perhaps he had died by the 
1 CONC time of the will, but he witnessed a baptism at a later date from that of 
1 CONC the will.
1 CONT  Anjou doesn't include him anywhere.
1 CONT  He is not listed in the Kingston baptisms.
1 CONT  It is always a question that arises whether that missing person from a

1 CONT Dolderbrink was a place near Wageningen, Gelderland, Netherlands 
1 CONC (Dolderbrink = valley commonland) where Huybert Brink's farm was located. 
1 CONC Seventeenth century Dutch often described themselves by their last place 
1 CONC of residence using the prefix van (from). In our case, except for a brief 
1 CONC span when the patronymic was used, the surname Brink/Brinck was customary.
1 CONT         The Brink Family stronghold was almost certainly Harderwyck, 
1 CONC twenty or so miles north of Wageningen in the Province of Gelderland. The 
1 CONC first Lambert Brinck appears in the St. George Guild records in 1439, and 
1 CONC the name Lambert persists into the Wageningen line which migrated to 
1 CONC America.
1 CONT          Huybert Brink who farmed at Dolderbrink, just outside the walled 
1 CONC city of Wageningen, was father to Lambert Brink who migrated to America 
1 CONC in 1660.
1 CONT The farm where Lambert grew up is clearly marked on a sketch map of 1634, 
1 CONC the original of which is in the archives in Arnhem. The fact that the 
1 CONC Brink farm is marked shows that the land was owned, not tenant farmed and 
1 CONC indeed it was sold upon the death of Huybert.
1 CONT          These lands were used for both sheep raising and tobacco growing 
1 CONC per a local historian. The family crest of the Harderwyck Brincks has as 
1 CONC its central device a beef animal, suggesting that they were graziers by 
1 CONC trade. The crest, adopted by Alphert Brinck in 1608, is especially 
1 CONC appropriate to the Canadian Brinks, descended from Nicholas II, whose 
1 CONC descendents engaged in cattle raising in the early days of the railroad 
1 CONC when cattle were taken in boxcars from Ontario to Calgary, Alberta.
1 CONT         When the family arrived in New Amsterdam, Lambert Huybertse 
1 CONC (Brink) and his wife, Hendrickje Cornelisse, had their son baptized who 
1 CONC had been born at sea, and then given the name Cornelis. Cornelius was 
1 CONC baptized on May 4, 1661 in the Dutch Church in New Amsterdam. The family 
1 CONC then went north up the Hudson River to the Esopus settlement. In 1662 
1 CONC Lambert Huybertse leased certain lands a Hurley, Ulster County, New York 
1 CONC for five years from Director Petrus Stuyvesant, the last Dutch Governors 
1 CONC of New Netherlands. At the expiration of the lease in 1667, he and his 
1 CONC four sons purchased these and other parcels
1 CONT there and in Marbletown, Ulster County, New York, providing future 
1 CONC property for his descendents.
1 CONT          The Dutch had some difficult times with Captain Brodhead, the 
1 CONC officer who was in command of the English forces under the new British 
1 CONC Governor Nicholls. In 1667, Lambert Huybertsen was one of the protesting 
1 CONC burghers in the meeting at Esopus, protesting the ill treatment of the 
1 CONC Dutch by the British soldiers. For the slightest offense by a citizen or 
1 CONC burgher, a commital to the guardhouse was the punishment. A Dutch 
1 CONC burgher, who insisted on keeping Christmas in the Dutch style in 
1 CONC preference to that of the English, was punished by
1 CONT imprisonment.
1 CONT         The villagers finally took up arms. Governor Nicholls was 
1 CONC notified and redress demanded. He sent a Committee to judge the matter, 
1 CONC and among other things, he counselled the Committee that if they found 
1 CONC Brodhead had disobeyed Nicholls' instructions, they were to suspend him 
1 CONC for that fault alone.
1 CONT        *Hurley was granted a patent on October 19, 1708. The patentees of 
1 CONC this tract were Cornelius Kool, Adrien Garretsie, Matthew Ten Eyck, 
1 CONC Jacobus DuBois, Johannes chepmoes, Roelof Swartwout, Cornelius Lammerse, 
1 CONC Peter Petersies, Lawrence Osterhout and Jannetie Newkirk. The successors 
1 CONC of the original trustees afterward bought 300 acres for the benefit of 
1 CONC the corporation.
1 CONT         Among the early settlers of the area around Hurley were families 
1 CONC named Crispell, DuBois, Cole, Newkirk, Schepmoes, Ten Eyck, Wynkoop, 
1 CONC Elmendorf, Roosa, Constable, Louw, Delamater, and others - mostly from 
1 CONC Holland and Belgium. In 1719 the following persons held the office of 
1 CONC trustees of the corporation of Hurley : Cornelius Kool, Adrien Garretse, 
1 CONC Jacob DuBois, Barnabus Swartwout, Jacob Rutse, Nicholas Roosa and Charles

1 CONC Sylvester (page 144+) :
1 CONT          The town of Hurley lies just west of the territory of Kingston, 
1 CONC and is one of the interior towns of the county. It is bounded north by 
1 CONC Woodstock, on the east by Kingston, south by Rosedale and Marbletown, 
1 CONC west by Marbletown and Olive. A large tract of land, known as the Hurley 
1 CONC Commons, originally granted by King George the First to Cornelis Cole and 
1 CONC others, as trustees for the people of Hurley, was divided among the 
1 CONC freeholders of the town.
1 CONT The settlement of Hurley was first known as Niew Dorp. As early as 1662 
1 CONC several patents were granted upon the territory of Nuew Dorp. The names 
1 CONC appearing in the papers are Thomas Hall, Nicholas Varlett, Mattys 
1 CONC Blanchan, Anthony Crispell, Lambert Huybertse,Roeloff Swartwout, John 
1 CONC Thomassen, Peter Schuyler, Jan Volckert, Lewis DuBois (Jacob's father), 
1 CONC Gosen Gerrets, Albert Hymanse Roosa and Lambert Kool.
1 CONT A commissioner from the British Government came to Ulster County in 1669 
1 CONC and on September 18th renamed Niew Dorp to Hurley, after the paternal 
1 CONC estate of the Governor Sir Francis Lovelace. The name was given in honor 
1 CONC of the Barons Hurley of Ireland.
1 CONT The earliest record of the town of Hurley or Niew Dorp was documented in 
1 CONC a list of those killed or captured there on June 7, 1663 during an Indian 
1 CONC attack. Prisoners included from the family of Louis Du bois, one woman 
1 CONC and three children (Jacob would have been about two years old); family of 
1 CONC Matthew Blanshan, two children; family of Lambert Huybertson, one woman, 
1 CONC two children; family of Albert Heymans, two children. There were other  
1 CONC prisoners named. The village of Hurley was entirely burned.
1 CONT           Lambert Huybertse was witness to the Indian treaty in Hurley in 
1 CONC 1677 upon which the New Paltz Patent is based (New York Land Papers, I., 
1 CONC page 114).
1 CONT          The name of Lambert Huybertse is also signed as witness twice to 
1 CONC the renewals of the celebrated Indian treaty negotiated in 1665 by 
1 CONC Governor Nicholls. He served as a soldier in Captain Henry Pawling's 
1 CONC company in 1670. He was one of the inhabitants of the Esopus, who 
1 CONC petitioned Governor Sir Edmund Andros in 1680 that a minister be sent 
1 CONC there.

1 CONC believe that Gerrit may have been Hendrickje's older brother and who 
1 CONC lived near Lambert Huybertse Brink in the Hurley area; her younger 
1 CONC brother, Mattheus Newkirk resided in New Jersey. Mayhaps she traveled to
